Statement by IJC President Vladimir Sloutsker on Gaza Rocket Bombardment Against Israel
“On behalf of The Israeli-Jewish Congress (IJC), I wish to firstly reiterate loudly, clearly and unequivocally, our full and unwavering solidarity with the people of Israel and our defense forces during this difficult time.
Over the course of the last 24 hours, over 350 rockets have been rained down upon Israeli civilians, putting some 2.5 million people in the line of fire, with dozens already injured and many homes destroyed.
In fact, the rockets are continuing as we write this, sending countless Israelis fleeing for safety in bomb shelters.
Imagine just for a moment if even one rocket was fired upon your city, your family or your community? This situation is simply intolerable!
Let there be no mistake or doubt: this assault, by the Iranian-backed ‘Palestinian Islamic Jihad’ (PIJ) organisation, is pure terror and barbaric act of evil, with complete and utter disregard for human life.
The Islamic Jihad is committing a gross double war crime here, of hiding behind civilians in Gaza, while indiscriminately firing at civilians in Israel. The State of Israel has every right – indeed duty – under international law, to take all necessary actions in defending and protecting the people of Israel.
We call on the entire world, all those who truly care about peace, who profess to be friends of Israel, to immediately, unequivocally and without reservation, condemn this heinous rocket bombardment and reiterate their solidarity with the State of Israel and its inalienable right to self-defence.”
