The Israeli-Jewish Congress (IJC) expresses our most profound sadness and shock at the heinous terror attack in the Barkan Industrial Zone in central Israel this week, that claimed the lives of two young Israelis – Kim Levengrad Yehezkal (28) and Ziv Hajbi (35).
Yehezkel was a young mother to a baby boy. Hajbi was a father of three. Both worked at in the Barkan Industrial Zone, an area in Israel that has been the model example of co-existence, with Jews and Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians working and living side-by-side.
During the attack, a Palestinian terrorist from a nearby village entered the factory where they were working. He tied up Yehezkel and then shot her point blank. Immediately after, he killed Hajbi, while seriously injuring a third person.
There are no words to fully convey the savagery and inhumanity of such cowardly action.
First and foremost, we extend our most sincere condolences and prayers to the families of Yehezkel and Hajbi, whose children will now be forced to grow up orphaned. May their memories always be blessed. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to the third victim, who is currently recuperating.
We also call on the international community, especially in the UN and EU to immediately and unequivocally condemn this barbaric attack in the most vehement terms.
The basic fact of the matter is that attacks like these do not occur in a vacuum. Such acts of pitiless slaughter are the direct result of a pervasive Palestinian infrastructure headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the Hamas in Gaza, indoctrinating hate, inciting violence and instilling a worldview justifying such gruesome acts. As Michael Oren , Israel’s Deputy Minister for Diplomacy observed, “this is not about the absence of peace, but the presence of hate.”
We further call on the international community to condemn the sickening glorification we have seen of this attack in Gaza, where candy and sweets were being handed out on the street, while ensuring that not a single cent of aid to the Palestinian Authority shall now go towards paying this vile terrorist and his family, a salary for life. Anything less would be not only a gross insult to the memory of Kim and Ziv by rewarding their murderer, but to be complicit in future terror attacks and violence against Israelis.
