IJC Delegation to Auschwitz – Birkenau for the occasion of Int’l Holocaust Memorial Day
This week, on 27th January 2017, The Israeli-Jewish Congress (IJC), together with our partners in TSKZ, the leading Polish Jewish representative organization, were deeply honored to participate in the official International Holocaust Remembrance day commemoration at Auschwitz – Birkenau.
The ceremony was held in the presence of the Prime Minister of Poland, Senior Government Officials, Survivors, Israel’s Ambassador, Diplomats, Director of the Auschwitz Memorial Museum and Clergy from different faith groups.
IJC was the only delegation from Israel to be represented during the official commemoration, which marked 73 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz – Birkenau death camp.
During the very moving ceremony, we laid a wreath in honor of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, including approximately 1 million murdered in Auschwitz alone.
However, as noted by IJC President Mr. Vladimir Sloutsker in an Op-Ed published in the Jewish News UK, remembrance – which is imperative – is not enough alone. We also have an obligation to act. The lessons of the Holocaust must serve as a clarion call to action, to both never forget the past, but also strive to learn from this most tragic page in the history of mankind in order to create a better future for our world.
