[Jerusalem Post] Shalom: Israel must face Iranian threat alone

By Sam Sokol, 04/18/2013

Israel must take care of the Iranian threat alone, Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom told assembled world Jewish leaders on Wednesday.

Addressing the Israeli Jewish Congress’s 2013 International Forum, Shalom referred to this morning’s rocket attack on Eilat, noting that “it shows us that the neighborhood is not a certain one and a quiet one.”

All of the developments in the region, he said, were going in the “wrong direction.”

Shalom called on his audience to “look at what’s happening now in Syria, where there is a massacre of 70,000 people” and note that “the world is not doing anything in order to stop it.”

The international response to the Syrian civil war, he asserted, “should teach us that we cannot put our future in the hands of the superpowers, even those that are very close to us, and we should do everything we can and everything that is needed in order to solve our difficulties by our own hands.

“Of course, the most important issue these days, not only for us but for the entire world, is that Iran is trying to become a superpower and to achieve a nuclear bomb,” Shalom added.

Shalom’s comments come just after IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz asserted that Israel’s armed forces have the military capability to deal with Iran’s nuclear program on their own.
