Vladimir Sloutsker, IJC President & Co-Founder, lights torch at Auschwitz-Birkenau during March of the Living ceremony
Earlier today, Dr. Vladimir Sloutsker, IJC President & Co-Founder, was one of 6 individuals chosen to light a torch outside Auschwitz-Birkenau in honor of the 6 million Jews who perished during the Holocaust.
The torch lighting ceremony was held under the auspices of the March of the Living organization, with whom the IJC is proud to associate itself with as a Partner for this very important event.
Other honorable individuals who lit the torch included: the Chief of the Israeli Defence Forces (together with a Holocaust survivor), World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder, Australian philanthropist and Holocaust survivor Frank Lowy, Tami Raveh (the daughter of former Adolf Eichman Prosecutor, Gidon Hausner) and Yiannis Boutaris, the Mayor of Thessaloniki (the Greek city from which so many Jews were deported to Auschwitz).
Dr. Sloutsker remarked it was “a great honor and privilege” to be chosen to light a torch on behalf of The Israeli-Jewish Congress, describing the experience as “deeply touching and moving,” adding “it was impossible to stay calm without tears while standing in front of this chamber of death where so many Jews died.”
Dr. Sloutsker was also especially impressed by the great number of people who came from abroad especially to participate in this important ceremony, including thousands of students, saying their mere presence was “testament to our victory and survival and our hope for the future”.
